The Misericordia men’s soccer team handed Penn College just its second loss of the season Tuesday at Mangelsdorf Field, defeating the Wildcats 6-0.

Joey Scanlon got the Cougars off to a good start, scoring exactly five minutes into the match by volleying in a pass from senior Josh Yoo.

Andy Bush scored next with an assist from fellow freshman Nick Ferguson before Shawn Smith scored the goal of the day- a 35-yard rocket that beat the Penn keeper to the upper right corner.

Senior Lurae Brophy made the first start of his career in goal and was forced into a difficult line drive save late in the first period. Ferguson also hit the crossbar in a half that ended 3-0 Misericordia.

The Cougar attack took some time to get going in the second half, as Scanlon and Tyler Anderson both had headers saved and junior Tim Bullis sliced a shot off the post from close-range.

MU eventually built on their lead through two finishes by Yoo, giving him a team-leading eight goals for the season. Aaron Barnhart assisted on the latter for the first point of his career.

Yoo’s two strikes sandwiched a penalty kick scored by sophomore Matt Scott after the winger was brought down inside the penalty area.

Brophy made three saves in gaining the victory. He combined for the shutout with freshmen Billy Sopko and Dan Fritz, who each saw their first collegiate minutes in goal.

Misericordia is now 7-4-3 on the season and will host conference rival DeSales, Saturday at 4 PM.
