An overtime goal by freshman
Kevan Nagle completed a furious comeback and put the Misericordia men's soccer team in the Freedom Conference championship game thanks to a 3-2 victory over Wilkes.
In the 97th minute, Nagle ran down a ball on the left side, managed to cut around his defender, and slotted his shot inside the far post to win the game.
The Colonels had no answer in the air for MU's
Joey Scanlon, who headed in two set pieces to tie the game after Wilkes had grabbed an early 2-0 lead.
Misericordia has a disastrous start to the game, as the hosts conceded a penalty kick in the first five minutes. Wilkes'
Greg Miller converted the chance.
Things got worse for the Cougars as Miller headed in a free kick to give the Colonels a quick 2-0 advantage.
MU did have chances in the first half, primarily off the head of Scanlon. The junior knocked one free kick to the back post where
Andy Bush headed it inches wide of the goal.
After two improbable comeback wins over Wilkes in 2008, the Cougars again had a mountain to climb in the second half against their rival neighbors.
Scanlon pulled Misericordia within one in the 53rd minute, heading in a cross from freshman
Nick Ferguson.
Momentum had swung completely in MU's favor, and the Cougars kept the pressure in the Colonels' half.
Cody Harman was saved from long range before Wilkes goalkeeper
Kaleb Smith made an outstanding stop on
Jay-P Evans' blast from the top of the 18.
The tying goal finally came with 15 minutes to play, as Scanlon powered in another header from Ferguson, this time on a corner kick.
Nagle was all over the field in the second half, totaling five shots for the game and constantly looking to take on defenders. He followed in a deflection late in the second half but Smith made a leaping save to stop his chip shot.
At the beginning of overtime, Nagle played a through ball to classmate Bush, but the striker's breakaway was again saved by Smith. Finally Nagle had a chance of his own and made it count, sending the Cougars to the Freedom championship game for the second year in a row.
Misericordia out-shot their opponents 17-5, with Smith (8 saves) coming to Wilkes' rescue on several occasions. MU goalkeeper
Andrew Loyd made one save.
The Cougars (11-4-3, 6-1-1) will travel to Manhattanville on Saturday for the conference final. Kickoff time is set for 4 PM.
