Garinger spent 30 years at Misericordia in a variety of capacities, not the least of which was friend of the athletics program.

He helped start the varsity golf program and served as its first coach along with co-coach Jack Hoover.

They led the Cougars to eight consecutive top-two finishes at the PAC championships, including two titles.  He was named the PAC Coach of the Year in 1998.

Garinger also founded the Cougar Club Golf Tournament that now bears his name and has served as the primary fundraiser for MU athletics for 21 years.
