Cougars Rally to ECAC Win

Hollie Sarnak singled in two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Misericordia University softball team rallied for a 4-3 win over Frostburg State in the opening game of the ECAC South Championships, Wednesday at Anderson Field.

Sarnak had two hits and Lindsay Miller had two hits and scored three runs for the Cougars.

Gina Urbon added an RBI-single to make a winner of Katie Eiden who worked three perfect innings of relief.

Brooke Tapman had both of Frostburg's hits, including a two-run homer.

Trailing 3-2 in their last at-bat, Courtney Novajosky drew a one-out walk to bring the tying run to the plate. Miller lined a single to right field and both runners moved up when the ball was misplayed.

Sarnak grounded a single through the hole between third and short to win the game.

Frostburg grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. After a dropped foul pop-up, Lindsay Freitag made the most of her second life by coaxing a lead-off walk and Tapman blasted a long homer to left one out later.

The Bobcats made it 3-0 with a run in the fourth. Tapman led off with a single and moved to second on an error. Following a sacrifice bunt to put runners at second and third, Tapman executed a perfect hook slide to beat the throw home on a groundout.

MU got on the board in the bottom of the fourth thanks to Miller. She singled to center to open the inning and stole second and third before scoring on a passed ball.

Miller scored again in the sixth as the Cougars pulled within 3-2. Miller reached on an error and moved to second when Sarnak ripped a single off the shortstop's glove. Wenner singled to left to load the bases and Urbon singled up the middle to drive in Miller.

Kat Lucenti started and allowed just one earned run while striking out four. Eiden struck out five of the nine batters she faced.

Misericordia, the defending ECAC South champions, improved to 25-12 and will play at Juniata, Saturday at 10:00 a.m.

Megan Magee struck out nine in 6.1 innings while absorbing the loss.

Frostburg's season ends at 23-15.
