Elmira used a three-run rally in the top of the seventh to reclaim a lost lead and stun the Misericordia University softball team as the Soaring Eagles grabbed a 6-5 victory, Sunday at Anderson Field. The second game of a scheduled doubleheader was rained out after just two batters.
Senior
Nicole Hoskins went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Classmate
Holie Sarnak hit 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Senior
Courtney Novajosky was 3-for-4 and scored a run. Junior
Nicole Wenner batted 2-for-4 with an RBI.
The Cougars put themselves in great position to win the game with a three-run sixth inning. Freshman
Jessalyn Paveletz got things going with a single and Novajosky doubled, sending
Jillian Castaldi (re-entering to run) to third.
From there, Sarnak singled in Castaldi before Hoskins doubled in both remaining runners, putting the Cougars up 5-3.
But the Soaring Eagles came flying back with three quick runs in the top of the seventh.
Caitlin Cromley led MU off with a single in the bottom of the seventh, but Misericordia couldn't get her around for the tying score.
Elmira scored once and stranded runners on second and third as well in the top of the first inning. Misericordia scored twice in the bottom half when Hoskins, Sarnak,
Nicole Boccia,
Gina Urbon and Wenner all singled, but the Cougars did leave the bases loaded.
The Soaring Eagles re-took the lead with a two-run homer in the second. In the top of the third, Cromley threw a runner out at third with nobody out, keeping the Cougars within a run.
Misericordia falls to 7-6 with the loss and will host Wilkes in a doubleheader on Thursday.
