Fall Teams Begin 2009 Season

8/31/2009 11:06:00 AM

The Misericordia University fall sports teams open the 2009 season on Tuesday, September 1. All seven fall teams are in action, with four Cougar sides competing at home.

The men's soccer team begins its defense of the Freedom Conference championship with a home matchup against regionally-ranked Dickinson. The Red Devils handed MU a 3-1 loss in 2008 and made a run to the second round of the NCAA tournament. With all of last year's top three scorers back in 2009, Dickinson will pose a difficult opening test for an ambitious Cougar team. Kickoff is at 7:30 PM under the lights at Manglesdorf Field.

Also at Manglesdorf Field, the MU women's soccer team opens with a 5 PM game against Lebanon Valley. The Dutchmen defeated the Cougars in overtime in 2008 and also have experience up front, with last year's top four scorers all returning.

Women's tennis begins their 2009 season at home against Cabrini. The Cavaliers are coming off a 15-5 season in 2008, but only return three players from last year's team. The match takes place at 4:00 PM.

In the Anderson Center, the MU women's volleyball team opens up against Arcadia at 7:00, the first of two Cougar matchups with the Knights this year. Misericordia defeated Arcadia 3-1 in their only meeting in 2008.

Away from Dallas, the MU field hockey teams opens up away to Gwynedd-Mercy, a team they defeated 5-1 at home in 2008. The game will serve as a good warm-up for the Muhlenberg Invitational this weekend. Meanwhile, the men's and women's cross-country teams will be away at Wilkes.
