After a 1-0-1 week, the Misericordia men's soccer team received its first weekly honors of the season, as announced by the Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation and the Eastern College Athletic Conference.
Junior midfielder
Joey Scanlon was selected as the Freedom Conference Offensive Player of the Week after scoring two huge goals for the Cougars, while senior goalkeeper
Andrew Loyd was honored as Defensive Player of the Week for both the Freedom Conference and ECAC Division III South. Both athletes serve as captains for the Misericordia team.
On Saturday, MU defeated John Carroll 1-0 at Mangelsdorf Field, only the second loss of the season for the #24-ranked Blue Streaks.
In a hard-fought game, Scanlon scored the only goal off an assist from midfielder
Cody Harman.
Scanlon also scored as Misericordia battled to a 1-1 tie in double overtime Wednesday evening at the University of Scranton, heading in a ball served up from the right sideline by
Bryan Kulbacki in the 14th-minute.
Loyd only conceded one goal across both games, in 200 total minutes played. He made seven saves against Scranton, and earned his first shutout of the season against John Carroll.
With his performances this week, Loyd dropped his goals against average to 1.11 for the season. The shutout against John Carroll, the 14th of his career, moved him into a tie for fourth all-time in program history.
Loyd's award was the first ECAC honor for a Misericordia athlete in the 2009-10 academic year.
