The Misericordia University baseball team defeated Husson 4-3, Thursday at Webber International University. It was the Cougars' fifth-straight victory, three of which have been by one run.
Freshman
Pete Doggett threw the final four innings of the seven-inning contest, earning the victory. Starter
Jamie Philippi struck out three and allowed just two hits in three shutout innings.
Offensively, junior
Nate Newman was 1-for-3 and blasted a two-run home run to right field.
Anthony Goncalves and
Andres Gonzalez were both 1-for-2 and drew a walk. Goncalves also stole two bases.
For the second straight game, MU's leadoff man reached after striking out, with
Nate Hamlin scampering to first on a wild pitch. He would eventually score before Newman homered, staking the Cougars an early 3-0 lead.
Husson had runners in scoring position in the top of the third, but Philippi got a strikeout to end the inning. In the bottom half,
Bubba Jasinski hit an RBI double off the wall, scoring
Jeff Slanovec and increasing Misericordia's advantage to 4-0.
Doggett entered the game and retired six of the eight batters he faced in the fourth and fifth innings, allowing just one hit.
Husson rallied in the sixth, as three straight singles resulted in three runs scored. With no out and a runner on second, Doggett was able to work his way out of the inning.
With MU's lead down to one, Husson staged one last comeback attempt in the seventh, loading the bases with one out. But Doggett struck out the final two batters to clinch the victory, adding a win decision to the two saves he had already accumulated on this week's trip.
The contest was meant to be a double-header but the second game was rained out. Misericordia will conclude its spring break trip tomorrow against Messiah in Winter Haven, FL.
