A ninth-inning bunt by
Anthony Goncalves scored
Bubba Jasinski and gave the Misericordia baseball team a 5-4 victory over Baldwin-Wallace, Sunday morning in Winter Haven, FL.
Starter
Pat Clark had a no-decision after throwing eight strikeouts and allowing just one run in five innings of work.
Goncalves finished 2-for-4 with the winning RBI.
Jeff Slanovec hit 2-for-4 with an RBI and
Brian Verdelli batted in two runs.
After the Cougars had jumped out to a 4-0 lead, the Yellow Jackets tied it up with a two-out, RBI triple in the fifth and three runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Freshman
Matthew Karabin came in to pitch and managed his way out of a bases loaded, no-out jam by allowing just one run and preventing Baldwin-Wallace from taking the lead. In the eighth, Karabin got two big strikeouts with a man on to keep the score even.
After Jasinski walked in the top of the ninth,
Kyle Engebrecht sacrificed him along to second. Senior
Jamie Philippi hit a pinch-hit single to move the go-ahead run to third, setting up for Goncalves' heroics.
MU had taken a 2-0 lead in their first ups when Verdelli hit a bases-loaded double to score
Nick Morreale (who had walked with one out) and
Nate Newman. Morreale started another rally in the third with a long double to straight center field. Slanovec was next with an RBI single and Jasinski doubled in Slanovec.
Smith struck out six of the eight batters he faced in the second and third innings.
The Cougars improve to 4-1 on the season and will be back in action tomorrow against Gordon (MA).
