The Misericordia University baseball team defeated Gordon 15-7 on Monday in a wild and entertaining game that included 25 hits, six errors and a handful of fluky plays.

Freshman Matthew Karabin struck out four in two one-hit innings of relief work, earning the win for a second straight game. Freshmen Ryan Murray (seventh and eighth) and Will Minderjahn (ninth) also threw scoreless innings in their first collegiate appearances.

Senior Jamie Philippi batted 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Nate Newman went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Bubba Jasinski was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Freshman Kenny Durling reached base four times in five plate appearances, scoring twice. Andrew Tressa batted in two runs and catcher Chris Tuttle recorded an RBI and scored twice.

Gordon jumped out to leads of 3-1 and then 7-3 after scoring four times in the top of the fourth.

The Cougars started to heat up in the bottom of the fourth. With Jasinski already on base, Tuttle started the rally by doubling. On the play, the sophomore made it all the way to third, found it occupied by Kyle Engebrecht, then fled safely back to second. Tressa later batted in both Tuttle and Engebrecht, with Philippi also scoring on the play.

After a great relief performance in the previous day's victory over Baldwin-Wallace, Karabin came in and struck out the side in the fifth.

In the bottom of the fifth, another strange play happened with two outs as an alert Engebrecht struck out to seemingly end the inning but was able to scramble to first base after the Gordon catcher couldn't hold onto the pitch. Durling scored on the play. Philippi then doubled in Engebrecht and Tuttle.

Now leading 9-7, Murray got a big strikeout with the bases loaded to escape the top of the seventh. MU would then put the game away in the bottom of the inning.

After Durling and Engebrecht walked, Tuttle sacrificed them along and Philippi batted in Durling. A wild pitch scored Nate Hamlin, who was pinch running for Engebrecht. By the time Philippi, Tressa, Anthony Goncalves and Jeff Slanovec had crossed the plate, the Cougars had a safe 15-7 lead.

Misericordia is now 5-1 this season, and continue their spring break trip on Wednesday against Mt. St. Mary.
