Tournament MVP
Jeff Slanovec had 15 points to lead the Misericordia University men's basketball team to a 62-60 win over Marywood in the championship game of the 20th Annual McCarthy Tire Laurel Line Tournament.
Justin Grotevant scored the winning points on a pair of free throws with 36 seconds to play as the Cougars won their third straight Laurel Line title.
The Pacers had a shot at the buzzer to tie from the right wing, but it was long.
Chris Undersinger added 15 points for the Cougars and
Ethan Eichhorst added 10 points.
Pierre Bakinde led the Pacers with a game-high 18 points and Brent Keyes and James Lavan added 13 and 10 points, respectively.
Eichhorst, Lavan and Keyes were named to the all-tournament team.
Misericordia built a 49-38 lead with 12:30 to play on a three-pointer from
Anthony Sergio and a layup from
Steve Artzerounian, but the Pacers scored six straight to get within 49-44.
Lavan scored eight straight points for the Pacers and Bakinde made a lyaup to cut the deficit to 58-56 with 4:32 to play.
Arterzounian's layup put the Cougars up 60-56, but Bakinde and Tyrone Baker both made buckets to tie the score with 1:05 to play.
Misericordia led throughout most of the first half before Bakinde converted a three-point play with 43 seconds remaining to give the Pacers a 29-27 halftime lead.
The Cougars used some long-range shooting to take control early in the second half.
Undersinger drained a three-pointer in front of his team's bench to put the Cougars ahead, 30-29, on MU's first possession of the second half.
After Marywood tied it on a Bakinde free throw,
Matt Greene took a nice pass from Undersinger and drained a three with a hand in his face for a 33-30 lead.
Eichhorst found Slanovec for a deep three-pointer and Slanovec returned the favor for an Eichhorst layup and a 38-30 Misericordia lead with 16:48 to go.
Misericordia went ahead 41-34 on another Slanovec three on a feed from Eichhorst and Artzerounian converted a three-point play for a 44-36 lead with 14:20 remaining.
Misericordia is 3-0 and will travel to Scranton, Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
