Misericordia University women's soccer standouts
Sam Helmstetter (Hazlet, NJ/Raritan) has been named to the NSCAA All-America team while teammate
Laura Roney (Kintnersville, PA/Palisades) joined her on the Mid-Atlantic First-Team All-Region team.
A junior forward, Helmstetter was named second-team All-American after earning all-region honors for the third consecutive year.
Helmstetter was named Freedom Conference Player of the Year after tying for the team lead in scoring (10g, 11a). She had a seven-game points streak and had two multiple-goal games.
Her 31 points are the ninth-highest single-season total in school history and her 11 assists are third all-time. She ranks seventh in career points (77) and goals (26) and fourth in career assists (25).
Roney, a junior midfielder/forward, was named all-region for the second straight year.
The Misericordia team MVP, Roney tied for the team scoring lead (11g, 9a). She had an eight-game goal-scoring streak.
She scored the team's only goal against national champion Messiah and in their second-round NCAA game at Amherst.
Roney is ninth in career points (64) and sixth in career assists (22).
Misericordia finished 14-5-2 and earned the top seed in the Freedom Conference Championships. The Cougars earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Championships where they beat Farmingdale State for their first NCAA Tournament victory.
