Second Half Shooting Woes Doom Cougars

Box Score A cold second half shooting performance proved costly to the Misericordia University men's basketball team as the Cougars fell 58-50 to McDaniel in the opening round of the Basinger Memorial Tournament, Monday night at Lycoming.

Steve Ware led the Cougars with 12 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Griffin Sponaugle added eight points and seven rebounds.

Misericordia led 29-26 at halftime, but shot just 14.8% from the floor over the final 20 minutes.

McDaniel opened the second half on a 10-0 run while holding the Cougars without a field goal for seven minutes to take a 36-29 lead.

Misericordia cut it to 36-34, but the Green Terror scored six straight points to go up 42-34 midway through the second half.

Down 46-36 with 6:52 to play, the Cougars scored six straight points to get within four as Sponaugle, Matt Greene and Joe Busacca all made a pair of free throws.

Misericordia got within four points twice in the final minute, but McDaniel answered by converting six free throws over the final 30 seconds to secure the win.

Misericordia led throughout most of the first half en route to a 29-26 halftime lead.

The teams traded baskets over the first five minutes of the game before Anthony Sergio's three-pointer gave the Cougars a 12-6 lead nearly six minutes into the game.

McDaniel rallied to take a 16-15 lead with 9:14 to go and the score remained within two points the rest of the way until Sponaugle hit a three-pointer with 25 seconds left to give MU a 29-26 lead.

Misericordia, 3-5, will face the University of New England in Tuesday's consolation game at 1:00.
