Box Score Freshman
Chris Edkins used his first career goal to break a scoreless tie in the 85th minute to help the Misericordia University men's soccer team past Arcadia, 1-0, Saturday night at Mangelsdorf Field.
Junior
Nick vonEgypt set up the game-winner by splitting the Knights defense and sending a beautiful cross to Edkins, who buried the shot past keeper Ryan Lantzy.
Both teams had opportunities to score in the second half, as Edkins and
David Malaquias each sent balls high over the goal. Steven Zellers also had a shot go just high for Arcadia with 25 minutes to go.
The defensive struggle moves Misericordia to 4-1 overall while the Knights fall to 2-3-1.
Both keepers were solid as Lantzy had six saves on the night and
Barry Fitzgerald recorded five for the Cougars. Fitzgerald's highlight of the night came in the first half when he sprawled out for a diving stop.
Derek Antonini had a chance to cement the victory with under three minutes to play but his header off the crossbar and his rebound attempt went just wide.
The Cougars are back in action Sept. 17 against Scranton for the second game of a four-game homestand.
