Cougars Dominate Aggies in Freedom Semi's

11/5/2014 8:35:00 PM

The 13th ranked and #2-seed Misericordia University women's soccer team cruised to a 6-0 victory over Delaware Valley in the Freedom Conference semifinals Wednesday night at Mangelsdorf Field.

The Cougars dominated the match from start to finish, outshooting the Aggies 43-4 while holding a 6-1 advantage in corners.

Megan Mahoney led the Cougars relentless offensive attack with two goals and three assists while Meghan Antrim and Alex Gallagher each had two goals. Erin McGreal added an assist while Maureen Ciccosanti and Alyssa Pojero combined for three saves and the shutout in net for MU.

The Cougars offense dominated the first half, scoring four goals in a span of just 11 minutes with the first coming when Gallagher found the back of the net off of Mahoney's corner kick in the 17th minute.

Gallagher struck again, this time finishing Mahoney's cross from the far side, to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead in the 19th minute.

Antrim then caught fire, hammering home two goals between the 24th minute and 28th minute. Her first goal came after getting her own rebound and then beating the keeper to left side of the net.

Antrim's second goal of the game came on yet another perfect cross from Mahoney, making it 4-0 MU midway through the first half.

After picking up assists on three of the Cougars' first four goals, Mahoney picked up two of her own early in the second half.

Mahoney's first goal came off of a cross from McGreal to give MU a 5-0 lead in the 48th minute.

Less than a minute later she came down the field and ripped a shot from 20 yards out into the back right corner of the net.

Emily Szeflinski and Amber Hartranft also added scoring chances for MU in the win.

The Cougars were just as dominant defensively as they were offensively, allowing just four shots and no real scoring chances with most of the Aggies shots coming in the game's final minutes.

With the win MU improves to 16-2-1 and advances to the Freedom Conference Championship for the fourth straight year. The Cougars have won the Freedom Conference title each of the last two years.

MU will travel to DeSales for a showdown with the top-seeded Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon at 1:00. The two teams battled to a 2-2 in the regular season finale on October 31 in Center Valley.

The winner of Saturday's match will receive and automatic bid and represent the Freedom Conference in the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championships.
