MU Set for ECAC Softball Championships

Misericordia University will host the 2014 ECAC South Division III Softball Championships, Saturday and Sunday, May 10-11 at Anderson Field.

Misericordia, 24-15, is the top-seed in the double-elimination event and will face fifth-seeded Arcadia (21-21) in Saturday's opener at 10:00 a.m.

Second-seeded McDaniel beat Cabrini, 3-0, in Thursday's opener and will face Alvernia, 22-14, Saturday at noon.  First-round losers will meet at 2:00 while the winners will play at 4:00.

Misericordia finished third in the Freedom Conference and is making its first ECAC appearance since finishing second in 2011.

The Cougars are led by freshman Bailee Schies, the Freedom Conference Pitcher of the Year who finished 13-6 with a 2.77 earned run average.

Junior third baseman Kristi Seiler was second-team All-Freedom.  She hit .374 with nine doubles.

Centerfielder Megan Gowe was also a second-team All-Freedom selection after hitting .333 with seven doubles and three triples.

Sam Hare earned honorable mention All-Freedom as a utility player.  She hit .353 with seven doubles, two homers and scored a team-high 24 runs.

Team MVP Megan Hardy was honorable mention All-Freedom as a catcher.  She hit .395 while hitting a school-record 12 homers.  She led the team with 49 hits and 39 RBI.

The Green Terror of McDaniel enters the weekend at 27-15 and is led by Caroline Brehm, the Centennial Conference Pitcher of the Year who struck out 16 in Thursday's win over Cabrini. 

Brehm is 24-11 with 352 strikeouts and a 1.37 earned run average while working 240.1 innings in 35 starts.

Senior outfielder Rachel Sidney leads the team in batting at .377 while senior first baseman Stephanie Maring is hitting a .359 with a team-high 33 RBI.

Alvernia advanced to the weekend with a 5-3 win over Penn State Behrend, Wednesday.

The Crusaders finished second in the Commonwealth Conference and split a pair of games against Arcadia during the tournament.

Amanda Turner, a first-team All-Commonwealth selection at designated player, leads the team in most major offensive categories, including batting average (.396), homers (8), RBI (29) and total bases (77).

Felicia McKenna was named second-team as an outfielder while Aly Shilling earned the same honor in the infield and Amanda Galanti was honorable mention at catcher.

Shilling hit .325 with four homers and 21 RBI and Galanti hit .286 with seven doubles and 15 RBI.

On the mound, Brittanie Wolfe is 13-11 with a 2.95 ERA.

Arcadia beat fourth-seeded Neumann, 6-2, Wednesday to improve to 21-21. 

Alicia McMahon leads the team in batting at .405 while Jessica Wood is hitting .328 with a team-high 14 doubles and29 RBI.

McMahon was named honorable mention All-Commonwealth in the infield and Wood made second-team as a utility player.

Nicole Larro and Leanda Helms were named second-team All-Commonwealth at outfield and catcher, respectively, while Sarah Gunia was honorable mention at utility.

Larro hit .285 and led the team with 24 runs scored while Helms hit .321 with two homers and 16 RBI.  Gunia hit .288 with eight doubles.

Erin Wilson was second-team at pitcher where she is 13-8 with a 1.78 ERA.
