Misericordia University students, alumni, faculty and staff dedicated a 1,500 pound limestone Cougar statue as part of the 2004 Homecoming festivities.

Presented by the Classes of 2002, 2003 and 2004 as their senior class gift, the statue was crafted by Clarks Summit resident Wayne Furee.  It is placed on top of a 3,000 pound stone in front of the Anderson Sports-Health Center.

“This statue will forever be a part of who we are," said Susan Helwig, vice president of institutional advancement. "It will be a place where students and their families and our alumni pose for photos. Outside a building that recognizes one of Misericordia University’s most generous donors and greatest friends, Dr. and Mrs. Robert Anderson, these young alumni have provided our college with the perfect gift, and we are most grateful."

Misericordia University officially changed its nickname to the Cougars in January, 1987, because it is a highland animal, thus providing some continuity with Misericordi'a's former nickname, the Highlanders.

The Cougar has prowled the sidelines at many Misericordia events since its introduction as the school's mascot and its "Paw Power" is evident in the winning spirit of the Misericordia University athletic teams.
