MU Falls 6-3 to King’s in Conference Play

10/1/2009 6:04:14 PM

The Misericordia field hockey team lost an offensive battle today at Mangelsdorf Field, falling 6-3 to local conference rival King's.

Samantha Sorokas scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season, with Jen Lozier and Megan Lafaw also adding goals, but the Cougars were unable to find an answer for King's forward Jenera Quinones, who scored a hat trick and now leads the Freedom Conference with 10 goals.

The Cougars had a golden opportunity when they were awarded a penalty stroke just 14 seconds into the game, but Sorokas missed wide right.

King's grabbed the lead ten minutes into the game on Quinones' first of the match, and increased its advantage to 2-0 off a corner with 12 minutes to go in the half. Heather Kozimor deflected Shawna Walp's shot into the cage for her first of two goals on the day.

Late in the half, MU was awarded another stroke and this time made good on it. Megan Lafaw roofed her shot, giving King's goalie Erin McGinley no chance to make a save.

The Cougars briefly had some momentum, with McGinley making nice saves on both Kelsey Debruyne and Sorokas. But Quinones scored a killer goal less than two minutes before halftime, allowing King's to take a 3-1 lead into the break.

Cougar goalie Grace Riker began the second half with a pair of nice stops on Walp and Danielle Terracciano, but Terracciano then made it 4-1 when she finished a nice passing sequence in front of goal by King's.

A flurry of goals in the final ten minutes saw Sorokas and Lozier score for MU, with Quinones completing her hat trick and Kozimor also scoring for King's, but the result was all but decided by then.

King's out-shot Misericordia 17-13 and held an 11-8 advantage in corners.

Misericordia drops to 5-6, 1-1 and hosts Kenyon on Saturday in a non-conference match-up.
