The Misericordia field hockey team improved to 3-3 on the season tonight with a controlled 2-0 victory over Moravian in which the Cougars kept their opponents to one shot, and none on goal.
Sophomore
Haley Ellis and junior
Jen Lozier were the goal-scorers for Misericordia, who totaled nine shots and held a 9-3 advantage in penalty corners.
In an uneventful first half, MU out-shot Moravian 4-0. The Greyhounds rarely threatened, except for a two-on-one break with eight minutes to play that was well defended by sophomore
Megan Lafaw.
The Cougars broke through with just over five minutes to play in the half.
Amanda Blank sent in a corner to
Chelsea Lamoreaux at the top of the circle. The freshman's driven shot was deflected up and in by Ellis for her team-leading third goal of the season.
MU doubled its lead immediately after the second-half whistle had blown. Seventeen seconds in, the Cougars broke free and
Samantha Sorokas found Lozier open at the back post to tap in for the 2-0 lead.
Moravian would record their only shot of the game four minutes later, but were unable to mount any serious pressure the rest of the way. MU's best chance after the second goal came with 15 minutes to play when Lamoreaux fired just wide off another corner.
Goalie
Grace Riker grabbed her third win of the season and second shutout. While her first shutout required the freshman to make 17 saves, she did not need to make any in this victory.
Next up, Misericordia hosts Cabrini, Saturday at noon.
