The Misericordia University field hockey team out-shot its opponents 21-10 but fell to Delaware Valley 2-1 in double overtime, Wednesday at Mangelsdorf Field.
Just when it appeared the game was heading to penalty strokes, the Aggies grabbed the victory with 2:22 remaining in the second overtime period, beating MU goaltender
Grace Riker near-post off a penalty corner.
Down 1-0, Misericordia had rallied to tie the game with 8:40 left in regulation. Junior
Samantha Sorokas was saved two times in a row, but the second rebound fell to senior
Amanda Blank, who fed
Kelly Pelcher for a tap-in goal. It was Pelcher's second goal in the past three games.
Earlier in the second half freshman
Gianna Handza had tried a difficult flip shot from the top of the area, but it was pushed away by the DVC goalie.
Both teams had chances to grab the victory in the first overtime. Blank found Sorokas right in front of goal midway through, but the junior shot just wide of the far post. Riker (five saves) then came up with a huge breakaway kick stop with a minute remaining on the clock.
The Cougars had a good chance in the opening minutes of the game, when
Camilla Hansen was stopped twice from close range.
With nine minutes left before halftime,
Kelsey DeBruyne set up Sorokas off a penalty corner but the junior's slap shot resulted in a nice block save by the Aggies goalkeeper.
Delaware Valley's first shot of the game didn't come until four minutes remaining in the first half, when Riker came out to make a nice breakaway save. However the Aggies would grab the lead soon after off a penalty corner, just 1:05 before the break.
With the loss, the Cougars fall to 3-2 in Freedom Conference play but are one more win away from clinching a playoff spot. MU is 7-7 overall and will travel to Eastern on Saturday.
