Several Cougars reached milestones as the Misericordia University women's soccer team cruised to a 3-0 victory over Gwynedd-Mercy, Thursday at Mangelsdorf Field.
Senior
Kim Suchoski scored a pair of goals early and sophomore
Sam Helmstetter added one in the second half.
In the third minute, sophomore
Laura Roney hit a corner kick to the back post that was knocked in by Suchoski. Roney's 11th assist of the season moved her into second all-time on the Misericordia single-season list, two short of the school record.
Just 3:33 into the game, Suchoski had her second, tapping in from Helmstetter after a nice cross by
Nicolette Hensel. It was Suchoski's 42nd career goal at Misericordia, moving her into sole possession of third all-time. Her 15th goal of the year also moved her up to fifth on the single-season list.
Suchoski nearly had a hat trick within the first seven minutes of play, breaking down the left hand side and ripping a shot off the far post.
The game settled down until midway through the second half. Suchoski grabbed an assist with a feed to Helmstetter, who slotted a shot past the keeper for a 3-0 Cougar lead.
Earlier, Roney had played a nice through ball to junior
Andrea Sierer, who poked her shot just wide of the near post.
The Griffins only mustered two shots on goal all game, and really only threatened in the 78th minute, when a GMC striker broke down the left side and forced MU senior
Morgan Myers into a diving save.
Misericordia improves to 11-5-2 overall with the victory and will travel to Wilkes on Saturday night. MU needs to win and have Manhattanville grab at least a point against Delaware Valley in order to qualify for next week's Freedom Conference championships.
