The Misericordia University field hockey team made their chances on penalty corners count as the Cougars defeated William Paterson 2-1, Thursday at Mangelsdorf Field.
Freedom Conference leading scorer
Samantha Sorokas added a goal and an assist to her season tally. Senior
Amanda Blank also scored and junior
Kelsey DeBruyne had an assist.
Less than three minutes into the game, Blank played a corner and then got into the box in time to deflect Sorokas' shot past the Pioneers' goalkeeper, putting the Cougars up 1-0 early.
Misericordia doubled its advantage seven and a half minutes later off another penalty corner. This time DeBruyne took the pass from Blank and fed Sorokas, who ripped her shot straight in from the left side.
DeBruyne nearly scored from the same spot later in the half, when her shot off a corner beat the goalie but was saved off the goal line by William Paterson's
Melissa Szeliga.
A stingy Misericordia defense didn't allow the Pioneers a shot until the final 14 minutes, when Cougar goalie
Haley Brandt saved
Jacqui Giammetta.
A minute later, William Paterson pulled with one.
Danielle Meade took a pass from
Jaclyn Bertos right in from of Brandt and finished into the right side of the goal, making the score 2-1 MU.
Brandt was making her first career start for Misericordia and had to make a nice kick save late to preserve the victory as the Cougars weathered the late storm.
MU improves to 6-5 on the season and will travel to FDU-Florham on Tuesday.
