The Misericordia University women's soccer team hit the crossbar twice late and had a goal disallowed in overtime as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Marywood, Wednesday night in Scranton.
Down 2-1 with just over 15 minutes remaining,
Christine Wilhelm found
Sam Helmstetter in the box and the forward turned her defender before firing into the left side of the goal to tie the game.
Helmstetter then could have won the game in the final minute of regulation when she ripped a shot off the crossbar.
In the opening minute of the first overtime,
Kim Suchoski also had a chance to end the contest but fired the ball off the same part of the bar that Helmstetter had hit just 85 seconds earlier.
With 3:25 remaining in the opening period of extra time,
Kristen Gedon played a ball out wide to Suchoski, who found a trailing Gedon back in front of the net for what seemed to be an outstanding winning goal.
However, as the Cougars were celebrating the referee was consulting with his assistant and finally called the players back onto the field, ruling that the Marywood goalkeeper had been interfered with.
The rest of the game played out with few notable chances, as Misericordia remained undefeated at 4-0-1 with a somewhat disappointing draw.
The Cougars had opened the scoring in the 11th minute, just after
Laura Roney had played a beautiful through ball to Suchoski, who forced Marywood's
Meghan Coyle into a great save. Roney ran down a ball from Helmstetter and touched it past her defender and onto her left foot, allowing her to loft a shot over Coyle and into the far corner.
After the goal, the MU attack seemed to stall a bit, although the Pacers didn't really threaten before halftime.
Everything changed early in the second half, starting with a dangerous Marywood free kick, inches outside of the box.
Lacey Habicht's initial shot was saved by Misericordia's
Morgan Myers on the goal line but
Erin Jones finished it off to even the score at 1-1.
Three and a half minutes later, the Pacers took the lead on an outstanding 25-yard shot from
Jessica Cosentino, off the far post and in.
Marywood also hit the post in the second half before MU rallied late, tying the game up and coming agonizingly close to winning it on multiple occasions.
The Cougars will make another trip to the Electric City to play the University of Scranton on Saturday.
