Samantha Sorokas scored the only goal of the game with 7:09 remaining in the second half as Misericordia University halted Montclair State's win streak at six with a 1-0 victory over the Red Hawks at Sprague Field on Wednesday evening.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Grace Riker stopped six shots for her third shutout of the season as the Cougars won for the second time in three games improving to 4-5 on the year.
The win also gave head coach
Robyn Fedor Stahovic her 101st career win - moving her past her former coach Kim Barbacci as the all-time winningest field hockey coach at Misericordia.
The loss was Montclair State first since falling to No. 9 Eastern University in the season opener on September 1.
Montclair State outshot Misericordia 10-5, but it was Cougars who got the only shot that would matter in the game.
The Cougars had the ball in the MSU circle off a penalty corner, but could not come up with anything. Montclair attempted to clear the ball however it was pushed right back in along the end line to
Emily Foley.
Foley made a backhand pass to the center of the cage five yards out where Sorokas was able to smack the ball inside the left post for her team-best seventh goal of the year and the only score of the game.
Riker made that lead stand up as she made two crucial saves with just over 5:30 left in the game,.
Misericordia held the edge in penalty corners, 9-8.
The Cougars will host DeSales, Saturday at 11:00 a.m. for Senior Appreciation Day and Homecoming.
