The Misericordia University women's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Susquehanna in double overtime, Saturday afternoon at Mangelsdorf Field.
The Crusaders scored the game-winner on their only shot of the second extra period in the 116th minute.
After falling behind 1-0 midway through the first half, the Cougars came out energized in the second half as
Sam Helmstetter netted the tying goal at 47:12.
Helmstetter carried the inside the box and when Rachel Norbuts came off her line, Helmstetter slotted the ball into the empty net at 47:12.
The Cougars nearly tied the score with 10 minutes remaining in the first half, but Helmstetter's shot off a corner was cleared off the line by Buriak.
Susquehanna made the most of their only chance off the first half as they took a 1-0 lead at 18:03.
Marissa DeParto won the ball along the end line and served it into the box. After deflecting of MU keeper
Jess Anderson, Laura Buriak headed in the goal for a 1-0 lead.
The MU attack was much more dangerous in the second half. After Susquehanna took the opening tap,
Alyssa Mocion stripped the ball and carried the length of the field before serving to
Laura Roney whose shot was blocked.
After Helmstetter tied the score, the Cougars had another good chance when
Courtney Dillon found DiPippa, but her header was wide left at 60:30.
Kaylee Macko ripped a shot high from 25 yards out at 69:16.
With under 10 minutes to play, Helmstetter's one-timer from in front of the net was right at Norbuts.
Off a re-start with 6:00 to play, Helmstetter found Roney whose shot was deflected out of bounds by Norbuts.
Emily Esposito got a shot off the ensuing corner, but Norbuts made a diving save.
DeParto gave SU a chance for the win when her shot caromed off the crossbar with under three minutes to play.
Misericordia is 1-2 and will visit Richard Stockton, Wednesday.
