MU Football Falls to FDU-Florham

Box Score Despite solid rushing efforts from Robin Custodio and Frank Santarsiero, the Misericordia University football team dropped to 0-8 in its inaugural season with a 41-10 loss to FDU-Florham in MAC action, Saturday afternoon at Mangelsdorf Field.

Santarsiero had 63 yards, including a 33 yard touchdown, and Custodio added a team-high 82 yards.

Steve Clemson added a 20 yard field goal for the Cougars.

Sean Weg led the MU defense with six tackles.

The Devils jumped out to a 13-0 lead with a pair of quick scoring drives in the first quarter.

FDU went 59 yards on two plays on its opening drive to take a 7-0 lead just 40 seconds into the game.

After both teams forced three-and-outs, the Devils recovered a fumble deep in MU territory and went 19 yards in two plays for a 13-0 lead with just over four minutes gone in the first quarter.

Misericordia responded with a 59 yard drive that eventually stalled at the FDU-Florham one yard line.

Cody Lamoreaux returned the kickoff to the 35 and after a short completion to Kurt Kowalski, Santarsiero set up a third and short with a six yard run.

Jeff Puckett picked up three yards on a quarterback draw for a first down at the MU 46 yard and a personal foul penalty moved the ball to the FDU 39.

Puckett hit Dean Lucchesi across the middle for a 12 yard gain and a first down at the FDU 23.

Santarsiero  picked up eight yards on a screen pass and Tyler Rowe had a nine-yard grab for another first down to the FDU one yard line, but the Cougars eventually turned the ball over on downs.

MU forced a punt and again drove deep into FDU territory.

Another personal foul against FDU gave the Cougars a first down at the FDU 17 and Lamoreaux picked up five yards off right tackle to the 12.

Puckett rushed for seven yards for a first down to the five yard line to end the first quarter.

Three short runs later, Clemson got MU on the board with a 20-yard field goal.

FDU answered with a four-play scoring drive that ended with a 34-yard touchdown pass and a 20-3 lead with 11:45 left in the first half.

The Devils added two more scores to take a 34-3 halftime lead.

The Cougars opened the second half with a 58-yard scoring drive that featured the running of Santarsiero.

From their own 42, he gained two yards on first down, but another personal foul moved the ball into FDU territory.

On fourth-and-two, from the FDU 33, Santarsiero went off left tackle, bounced outside and raced down the sideline for a touchdown with 12:53 to go in the third quarter.

The Devils added a TD in the fourth quarter and Custodio did all the work on MU's 55-yard drive as the Cougars ran out the final 6:17 of the game.

MU will travel to Albright, Saturday before hosting Lycoming in their season finale, November 10.
