The Misericordia University field hockey team found it's offense just a little too late, falling to Kean, 2-1, in a non-conference game at Mangelsdorf Field Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore
Emily Hegner scored her first career goal for the Cougars in the closing seconds, but it wasn't enough to overcome an early deficit as MU (2-3) dropped it's third straight contest.
Kean (3-2) found the back of the net early, as Korri Thompson finished a pass from Julie Knodt to give Kean a 1-0 advantage in the 14
th minute.
In a game that was slowed greatly by heavy rains, neither team managed to score again until the 53
rd minute, when Kean's Stephanie Soares gave her team a much-needed insurance goal to put them up 2-0.
MU had what appeared to be a great opportunity in the 68
th minute, as
Allison Alexander managed to get by Kean goalkeeper Erin Langan, but defender Jacquelynn Coleman was able to step in and make a goal-line save.
A Kean foul in the waning seconds led to a MU corner after time expired. Kean failed to clear the ball from the circle, extending the game as two more corners were called. On the third and final corner, Hegner managed to clean up a deflected shot to close the scoring at 2-1.
MU goalkeeper
Haley Brandt took the loss, despite stopping 10 shots. Kean outshot MU 12-10 and held a decisive 18-6 advantage in penalty corners.
The Cougars will finish out their six-game homestand on Tuesday when they host Alvernia at 7:00 PM.
