MU Women Drop Heartbreaker in NCAA Opener

The Misericordia University women's soccer team lost in heartbreaking fashion, 2-1, to Roger Williams, in the first round of the NCAA Championships, Saturday at William Smith.

Emily Szeflinski scored the lone goal for the Cougars off an assist from Rebecca Robins in the 73rd minute, but the Knights notched the game-winner off a corner with less than 10 minutes remaining.

MU charged forward looking for an equalizer and had several good looks at a game-tying goal.

The first opportunity came in the 86th minute when Hannah Larkin came within inches of a Kylen Smith cross that the defense misplayed, but the Roger Williams keeper was able to cover the ball.

In the 88th minute, Jackie Stevens got the ball near the midfield and beat several defenders before laying the ball off to Alex Gallagher who ripped a shot just over the upper right hand corner.

Maureen Ciccosanti had seven saves in the game and made several more impressive punches on dangerous crosses throughout the game.

The Cougars had plenty of opportunities to score throughout the match.

Larkin gathered a loose ball just inside the 18, but her shot sailed high in the fifth minute.

Gallagher played a ball in from the right wing to Szeflinski in the 14th minute, but her shot was over the crossbar.

Ciccosanti made a stupendous diving save on RWU's leading goal scorer Mariah Kaiser to keep the game scoreless in the 21st minute.

Smith created the best Cougar opportunity of the first half when she crossed a ball from the left wing that went over the Roger Williams keeper and caromed off the inside of the right post.

Gallagher crossed a ball that Stevens redirected but the RWU keeper made a nice save in the 28th minute.

Roger Williams got the board 10 minutes later when Raleigh LeMiere-Barnes headed home a cross from Samantha Woznicki.

Stevens ripped a shot near post from the left wing forcing the keeper to punch the ball aside for a corner kick early in the second half.

In the 65th minute, the Cougars had nice little build up, with Gallagher taking a quick throw to Stevens who played it to Amber Hartranft, but the keeper stopped the shot.

Seven minutes later, the Cougars pinged the ball around the box, having several of their shots blocked or deflected before Robins controlled the ball and laid it off to Szeflinski who hammered it into the net.

In the 73rd minute Ciccosanti punched a ball wide that was headed for the upper left corner.

The Cougars finished 15-4-2 while Roger Williams improved to 20-0-3.
