The Misericordia University women's soccer team's run to a fourth consecutive MAC Freedom championship was halted by Wilkes in a penalty kick shootout, Tuesday night at Mangelsdorf Field.
After 110 minutes of scoreless soccer, the Colonels were perfect on their five PK attempts while MU was wide left on the third attempt.
Meghan Antrim and
Kylen Smith both converted for MU to keep the Cougars even, 2-2.
After a miss on their third attempt,
Ashley Edgell kept the Cougars alive, but Brittany Gurreri clinched it for the Colonels.
Kate Mahoney had 12 saves for Wilkes while
Maureen Ciccosanti had three saves for Misericordia.
Misericordia had a 23-12 advantage in shots, including 12-3 on goal, and had a 12-2 edge in corners.
Rileigh Jo Evitts nearly won it for MU early in the second OT, but Mahoney made a diving stop near the left post.
The Cougars defense stuffed two shots inside the box early in the first extra session.
Misericordia had several quality chances in the second half of regulation.
On a re-start in the opening minute of the second half, Smith served a ball that Antrim headed on goal, but Mahoney made the stop.
Emily Szeflinski's shot headed for the right post was thwarted by another diving stop by Mahoney at 55:26 and Stevens blast from 25 yards out sailed high two minutes later.
Kristen Murphy's one-timer off a corner was wide left at 75:24.
Just over a minute later, Antrim settled a ball in the box and ripped a shot from 15 yards out, but Mahoney came up big again
Szeflinski's shot from eight yards out was deflected over the goal at 81:49 and Mahoney made yet another diving stop on Jackie Steven's header near the right post at 88:53.
Wilkes had the first two chances of the match when Nicolette Towlen's chip shot from 10 yards out was wide left in the second minute.
Two minutes later, Taylor Wright's header off a restart from just outside the box was wide right.
Misericordia's first opportunity came off a corner 17 minutes into the match when Jackie Stevens took a corner from the left side. The ball was knocked out to the top of the box where
Kristen Murphy floated a shot on goal.
Three minutes later,
Devin Simpson played a ball over the top of the Wilkes defense that was just out of the reach of
Alex Gallagher.
Kristin Ritter put a shot on goal off a restart from 40 yards out, but Mahoney made a leaping save with 10 minutes remaining.
Rileigh Jo Evitts entered the game and provided a spark when her blast from 20 yards out sailed just over the bar at 38:15.
Misericordia is 15-3-2 and will await a potential at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
