The Misericordia field hockey team fell, 3-2, to Manhattanville on senior day at Mangelsdorf Field Saturday afternoon.
Haley Gruber and
Kailey Vogl each scored a goal for the Cougars while
Suzhaunna Lerch had an assist.
The teams traded possession early, with both teams drawing penalty corners but the Valiants struck first to take a 1-0 lead with 27 minutes to go in the half.
Less than three minutes later MU tied it at one.
Lerch got to a loose ball in the box and hit it over
to Gruber who tapped it in to make it 1-1.
The Cougars defense was put to the test the next several minutes, with
Jenn Gazdick making several saves to keep the score at 1-1.
With 17 minutes to go in the half, Gruber passed the ball to
Maddie Keegan who sent over to Vogl who was waiting at the far post, but her shot went just wide. Her next shot would find the back of the cage.
With a little over three minutes to go in the half,
Vogl got to a loose ball in front of goal and smashed it into the far side to make 2-1 MU.
The Valiants scored off another penalty corner to make it 2-2 heading into halftime.
Two minutes into the second half Manhattanville scored their third goal to make it 3-2.
Misericordia ramped up the pressure, forcing the Valiants keeper to make four saves and drawing five penalty corners over the next eight minutes.
With just under 10 minutes remaining,
Melanie Fry took a pass from Vogl and smacked a shot towards goal but the keeper kicked it wide.
With five minutes to go in the game,
Colby Eldridge played a ball in that Gruber touched over to Vogl who redirected it towards goal but the keeper knocked it away.
The Cougars narrowly outshot the Valiants, 12-11, and held an edge in penalty corners, 11-7.
Misericordia will play at Eastern, Tuesday at 4:00. Â
