The Misericordia women's soccer team fell in the first round of the NCAA tournament, 2-1, to Swarthmore,on a windy Saturday afternoon at Hitchcock Field on the campus of Amherst College.
Jacqueline Stevens scored the lone goal for the Cougars.
Eight minutes into the contest, Stevens played in a corner and
Alex Gallagher put a shot on frame that the keeper parried. The loose ball found its way back to Stevens, but her shot went just wide of goal.
Four minutes later, Swarthmore defender Yasmeen Namazie's shot was going in but
Kylen Smith cleared the ball off the line to keep the score at 0-0.
Alyssa Pojero made three saves in the first 15 minutes as Swarthmore looked dangerous early on.
In the 23
rd minute, Swarthmore defender Caroline Coats shot from 20 yards out, the ball went over the outstretched arms of Pojero and in to make it 1-0 Swarthmore.
MU turned up the pressure over the next 20 minutes.
Following the Swarthmore goal, Gallagher came down the left wing, beat a defender and crossed the ball to the back post to Stevens, but her shot went wide.
In the 27
th minute, Gallagher ripped a shot from 20 yards out, but it went to the right of the goal.
Eleven minutes later, the Cougars found an equalizer.
Swarthmore played in a goal kick that Gallagher headed right back towards the Garnet goal. Stevens ran onto it, took one touch before chipping it over the keeper to make it 1-1 heading into halftime.
In the 61
st minute Swarthmore forward Hannah Lichtenstien fired a shot towards the top left corner from outside the box that Pojero made an outstanding diving save on to keep the score level.
A minute later Stevens got free and put a shot on frame but the Swarthmore keeper stopped it.
Misericordia was called for a foul inside their own box in the 65
th minute so Swarthmore was given a penalty shot. Pojero went the right way, her right, but the ball was just out of reach and Swarthmore went up 2-1.
MU was aggressive off the restart, hunting for another goal.
Gallagher fired a shot wide and then fired a low drive that the keeper stopped.
In the 73
rd minute she blasted a shot from 20 yards out that smashed into the right post. Stevens got the ball and shot again, but it was stopped.
Gallagher tested the Swarthmore keeper again in the 81
st minute, but the keeper made another nice save.
Five minutes later
Jeanna Orfanos took a pass, turned and played a through ball to Stevens but a Garnet defender blocked her shot at the last second.
Pojero made seven saves in goal for MU.
The Cougars outshot the Garnet 17-15 while each team had four corners.
Misericordia finishes the season 17-4.
