MU Field Hockey Advances to MAC Freedom Title Game

The Misericordia University field hockey team advanced to the MAC Freedom championship game with a 3-2 win over Wilkes, Wednesday night at Mangelsdorf Field.

The Cougars extended their win streak to eight games and will host DeSales, Saturday at 6:00.

Colby Eldridge had a goal and an assist to lead the Cougars and Haley Gruber and Rebecca Kaschak added goals.

Haley Gayoski had a goal and an assist for Wilkes and Marissa Surdy added a goal.

Katelyn Campbell had two saves for Misericordia and Dallas Kendra had one stop for the Colonels.

The Cougars took an early lead off a corner when Eldridge sent a pass across the crease and Gruber jammed a shot inside the right post at 13:04.

The score stood for the rest of the half until Eldridge scored off her own rebound with just two seconds remaining before halftime.  She carried in from the right wing and got a rebound of a deflected shot and whipped a shot inside the right post for a 2-0 lead.

Surdy got Wilkes on the board early in the second half when she placed a reverse-stick shot into the upper left corner off Gayoski's feed from the right flank at 37:38.

The Cougars answered on the third of three straight corners when Kaschak gathered a rebound of the goalie's pads and slammed a shot home for a 3-1 lead at 43:16.

Misericordia had a dangerous opportunity with 14 minutes to play when Eldridge dribbled the length of the field and drew a penalty corner which led to Madisyn Granoski's shot that went just inches wide of the right post.

Wilkes responded with a corner just minutes later that resulted in a sprawling save by Campbell.

The Colonels got within a goal when Gayoski's well-placed shot from the right wing rolled inside the left post with six minutes remaining.

Wilkes earned two penalty corners down the stretch, but couldn't get another shot on goal.

Wilkes ends the season at 8-10 while Misericordia improves to 11-8.
