Cougars Fall in 2OT to Geneseo in Second Round of NCAA Tournament

The 23rd-ranked Misericordia women's soccer team fell to #12 SUNY Geneseo, 1-0, in double overtime in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, Sunday afternoon in Geneseo. The Cougars finish the season at 15-5-2.

Misericordia had a 15-11 advantage in shots and a slight 7-6 edge in shots on goal. Geneseo had a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.

The Cougars had the first scoring opportunity of the game in the fifth minute. Alex Gallagher had the ball around midfield and sent it up to Jackie Stevens who was running down the middle. Stevens dribbled another 20 yards before firing a shot. The Geneseo keeper got her hands on it before the ball hit the crossbar and eventually was picked up by the goalie.

In the ninth minute, Gallagher had a shot to score herself, but her shot from the edge of the box just grazed the top of the crossbar and went out of play.

In the 14th minute, the Knights had their first chance of the game. Jennifer Moran was able to get behind the Cougar defense and looked to have a clear shot on goal, but Pojero came sprinting off her line to make the save.

The Cougars looked to have broken through in the 26th minute when Stevens received the ball in the box from Gallagher and put it in the back of the net, but she was waved offside.

In the 28th minute, Geneseo had a dangerous chance off a corner kick but Ashley Byrne's shot went high.

In the second half, the Knights had a chance in the 53rd minute off a corner kick. Audrey Reid took the corner and sent into the box where Geneseo was able to get three shots off, but two of them were blocked by the Cougar defense before the third one was saved by Pojero.

The Cougars had one of their better chances in the second half in the 65th minute when Devyn Anderson put a shot on goal from close range, but could not get much on it and it was saved by the keeper.

Misericordia had one last chance in regulation, earning a corner kick with ten seconds left, but Stevens' corner went out of play.

In the 97th minute, the Cougars earned a free kick right on the edge of the box when the Geneseo goalie collided with Hannah Larkin. Gallagher took the free kick and sent the ball toward the goal but her shot was saved.

In the 106th minute, Geneseo scored the game-winning goal off a corner kick. Reid took the corner and sent it into the box where it found the head of Byrne whose shot went into the back of the net.
