Strong Pitching Leads MU to Sweep of Susquehanna

The Misericordia University softball team used efficient pitching and excellent defense to sweep Susquehanna University on a cloudy Thursday afternoon at Anderson Field.

MU won game one 3-2 and game two 1-0.

Victoria Schmidt tossed a complete game while allowing five hits and striking out two to get the win in game one.

Melanie Quintanilla went 1-3 with an RBI and a run scored, Lori Brennan was 1-3 with a double and Brooke Moyle was 1-3 with a double and a run scored.

The River Hawks struck first via a two-run homer to center in the first.

In the top of the second, Susquehanna tried to steal third with two outs but Brennan fired the ball to Mackenzie Yurko who applied the tag to end the inning.

Misericordia took the lead in the bottom of the third.

Moyle led off by ripping a double to right center. The next two batters were retired before Quintanilla singled up the middle. Moyle rounded third and scored easily to make it 2-1. Alexis D'Amico bopped a single to left and Abby Marzzacco reached on a throwing error by the shortstop. D'Amico and Quintanilla both scored on the throwing error to take a 3-2 lead.

In the top of the fifth, Quintanilla made an impressive diving stop on a hard hit ball to her left before she threw the runner out at first.

In the top of the seventh, Schmidt got the first two outs herself. She snagged the ball out of the air and tossed it to first to get the first out. She struck the next batter out looking and the final batter lined a ball directly to Taylor Kenerson to end the game.

Jordan Hoffman scattered seven hits over 6.1 innings to earn the victory in game two. Moyle got the final two outs and the save. Brennan was 1-3 with a solo homer while Kenerson and Jess Pluta both went 1-2.

In the top of the second with one out, Jessica Pluta made an impressive diving catch on a ball in shallow center field.

Brennan scored the lone run of the game by crushing a ball over the fence in right.

Pluta made another tough diving catch on a ball hit to shallow center in the top of the fifth.

In the top of the sixth with one out, D'Amico tracked down a ball that was hit deep to left center to prevent an extra base hit.

In the top of the seventh, Moyle entered the game with one out and the bases loaded. The first batter she faced hit a ball into foul territory that Marzzacco snagged for the second out. Moyle got the final batter to ground out to short to end the game.

MU is 15-15 and will host Eastern, Saturday at 1:00.
