MU Rally Comes Short at Widener

The Misericordia University football team put together an impressive fourth-quarter rally in a 34-21 loss at Widener, Saturday afternoon.

Trailing 27-0, the Cougars scored three times over the final 10:13.

Brady Williams threw for 256 yards and three touchdowns and added 110 yards on the ground in his first career start.

Isaiah Williams had seven catches for 143 yards, including a 79-yard touchdown.  Klayton Kelly and Jon Yanko added touchdown receptions.

Vince Maldonado and Tyler Collins both had eight tackles to lead the MU defense while Trevor George added six stops.

The Cougars drove deep into Widener territory early in the fourth quarter, but turned the ball over on downs.

MU got the ball back at their own 11 yard line when they blocked a field goal on the ensuing drive.  Brady Williams connected with Isaiah Williams for a 79-yard scoring strike on first down to get the Cougars on the board with 10:05 to play.

After Widener answered with a score to make it 34-7, Nick Yeager returned the kick-off 45 yards into Widener territory.

Brady Williams scampered 33 yards to the Widener 14 and then hit Isaiah Williams for 12 yards to the five.

Vleck plowed for three yards on fourth down to set up a first and goal and Yanko's one-yard TD catch made it 34-14 with 3:12 remaining.

Henry Morris forced a fumble on the Widener's next possession and Jake Nagle recovered to give the Cougars the ball with 2:32 to play.

Vleck went 14 yards on first down and Kelly converted a third down with a 15-yard grab to the Widener 11.  Williams' keeper gained five yards and he hit Kelly for the last five and a score to make 34-21 with under a minute left.

Misericordia opened the game with Collins recovering an onside kick.   The Cougars moved 25 yards in seven plays before stalling at the Widener 32.

The Pride went 72 yards in nine plays for the game's first score and used a big play to take a 14-0 lead with 1:57 left in the first quarter.

Vleck returned the kick-off 21 yards to the 42 and Kelly's 14-yard reception gave the Cougars a first down at the Widener 40.

Mark Rainey's 20 yard reception put the Cougars at the 18.  A holding penalty backed the Cougars up and they eventually turned the ball over on downs at the Widener 22.

The Pride drove deep into MU territory, but the Cougars' defense stiffened and held on a first-and-goal from their own six.  Jordan Aquino made a stop for no gain from the one and Maldonado followed with a tackle for a three-yard loss.  An incompletion gave the Cougars the ball at their own one yard line.

Rainey had a 20-yard reception to the 26 and a Williams to Williams connection was good for 15 yards.

Two runs by Brady Williams moved the Cougars across midfield.  Josh Dieter had a 25-yard reception to the Widener 13 but the Pride forced a fumble on the play to take over with 5:01 left in the first half.

The MU defense forced a three-and-out and took over at their own 48.  Williams rambled for 29 yards to the Widener 35.  After a false start penalty, Williams ran for 12 more, but two incompletions gave Widener the ball at their own 28 with 1:21 left in the first half.

A big pass play and a pass interference penalty moved the Pride inside the MU 10-yard line, but Nick Yeager came up with a big stop at the one yard line to end half with the Cougars down 14-0.

The Cougars punted on their first two possessions of the second half and Widener converted both into TD's for a 27-0 lead late in the third period.

Misericordia is 0-3 and will host Wilkes, Saturday.
