Six different Cougars scored as the #9 Misericordia University women's soccer team defeated Manhattanville, 6-0, for their eighth straight victory in its regular season finale, Saturday in Purchase, NY.
Misericordia dominated play in the first half with five goals and a 20-1 shots advantage.
Kaylee Sturans and
Jeanna Orfanos led the way with three points apiece.
The Cougars tallied their first score in the fifth minute courtesy of
Kendall Pearage, who found the back of the net after chipping a shot through a sea of bodies from 12-yards out. It was the first-year midfielder's fifth goal of the season.
In the 20
th minute, Sturans netted her third goal of the season after scoring on a rip from just outside the box. After the defense forced a turnover around midfield, Sturans carried the ball to the right side, beat her defender and elevated a shot over the leaping goalkeeper toward the far post.
Orfanos added on another score in the 25
th minute following a diving save by the Valiant goalkeeper, which denied an
Ashley Edgell rip. Orfanos secured the rebound and chipped it into the back of the net for her team-leading eighth score.
Moments later,
Hannah Larkin scored on a breakaway after Orfanos played her the ball through traffic, which forced the goalkeeper to range to the top of the box. Larkin beat the sliding keeper to the loose ball and chipped a shot over her head for the midfielder's seventh goal and fifth in the last three games.
In the 39
th minute, Misericordia concluded the first half with a goal from
Kenzi Pfeifer. The sophomore forward deflected in her second goal of the season following a Sturans cross to give the Cougars a 5-0 lead heading into halftime.
Early in the second half, the Cougars built on their first half momentum with a
Maddy Carlo goal during the 54
th minute. The first-year midfielder tapped in a cross from six-yards out for her second goal of the season.
Alexis Benedetto and
Hailey Reeder made three saves and combined for the team's ninth shutout of the season.
Misericordia finishes the 2018 regular season with a 13-2-1 overall record and a 7-0 MAC Freedom mark and will host FDU-Florham in the MAC Freedom semifinals, Wednesday at 7:00.
