MU Field Hockey Falls to William Paterson on Second Half Goals

The Misericordia University field hockey team lost to William Paterson University, 2-0, on two second half goals, Tuesday at Mangelsdorf Field.

Katelyn Campbell and the Cougars defense kept the Pioneers scoreless early, but couldn't fight off a second half surge. Campbell ended the contest with nine saves, seven of which occurred in the second half.

Misericordia had a chance in the 15th minute when Anna Effinger ripped a shot from five-yards out that deflected off the goalkeeper's chest pad. It was the Cougars best scoring chance of the first half.

Later in the first half, Campbell kept the Pioneers off the scoreboard with a phenomenal stop against Corinne Lenzinger in the 27th minute. The junior forward had a one-on-one opportunity against Campbell, but was denied by a diving save toward the goalkeeper's right side

Early in the second half, Campbell made several more highlight-reel stops in the 45th minute. Following a William Paterson penalty corner, Campbell made a diving stop to deny Kristin Freas-Papa. She then ranged to the far post to deny Abigail Viola with a pad save on her put back attempt.

Following Campbell's defensive stand, the Pioneers earned another penalty corner and connected on a goal from Viola toward the end of the 45th minute. William Paterson then added on a second score moments later from Michaela Meillier in the 46th minute.

The Cougars threatened in the 65th minute, but couldn't connect when Effinger played a one-timer above the cage from the goalkeeper's opposite side.

Misericordia will return to MAC Freedom play on Saturday at FDU-Florham.
