The Misericordia University women's soccer season came to an end with a 1-0 loss at Middlebury in the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament, Sunday.
Ellie Greenberg netted the game-winner for Middlebury in the 66th minute on a cross from Sabrina Glaser. Â It was her sixth goal of the season and her second straight game-winning tally.
Misericordia had their opportunities offensively, but couldn't put one in the back of the net.
Michaela Fasolino had one of the Cougars' best chances when she lofted a ball on goal from 18-yards out after a touch pass from Ashley Edgell in the 53rd minute. The Panthers' goalkeeper leaped in the air and barely got a hand on the ball to deflect it over the crossbar.
Later in the half, Edgell hit the far post with a header after Evelyn Logie played her the ball from the left side in the 65th minute.Â
Both scoring chances were generated off free kicks from Kristen Ritter, who has been a game-changing athlete for the Cougars throughout her four-year career.
The Cougars nearly took the lead in the first half, but couldn't connect on a quality scoring chance in the 23rd minute.
Maddy Carlo played a beautiful through ball to Kendall Pearage in the box, however, the Middlebury keeper was able to disrupt the play and redirect the shot before Pearage could get enough on the ball.
The Cougars had another opportunity on the keeper's ensuing deflection, but were unable to get a shot off before the defense could recover.
Misericordia's defense fought off several scoring chances throughout the afternoon while keeping the Cougars within striking distance.
First-year back Zoee Farr came away with a huge defensive stop in the 16th minute when she blocked a Gretchen McGrath shot from just in front of the net. McGrath had an open look at the goal, but was denied by the foot of Farr, who deflected the ball behind the net.
Later in the half, Alexis Benedetto punched an Eliza Robinson free kick above the crossbar after Robinson earned a strike from the right corner and attempted to play the ball to the near post.
Benedetto ended the game with four saves and finished postseason play with 18 total stops.
The Cougars defense stood their ground once more in the 68th minute after fighting off an excellent Middlebury scoring chance.
Simone Ameer took a rip in heavy traffic in front of the net, but Ritter and Lauren Anderson were there to block the shot and clear the ball.
Misericordia ends with a 17-3-2 record while Middlebury advances to the Final Four in Greensboro, NC where they will face Washington University.
