The Misericordia University women's soccer team won its third straight MAC Freedom title with a 2-1 win over Wilkes University, Saturday evening at Mangelsdorf Field.
Kaylee Sturans and
Jeanna Orfanos scored for the Cougars and Jessica Egan had a late penalty kick goal for the Colonels.
MU's
Kristen Ritter was named the MAC Freedom Tournament MVP after another stellar defensive effort.
Evelyn Logie and
Alexa Alchevsky had assists for the Cougars who improved to 15-2-1 while claiming their sixth title in seven years.
Alexis Benedetto made three saves in goal for Misericordia while Samantha Cecere had three stops for Wilkes.
Misericordia took a 1-0 lead late in the first half on a well-placed shot by Sturans.
Alchevsky collected a loose ball and laid it off to Sturans who placed a shot into the upper right corner from 25 yards out at 32:59.
The Cougars added an insurance goal early in the second half when Logie dribbled around two defenders near the left edge of the box before serving a ball to Orfanos who headed a shot under the crossbar at 52:35.
Wilkes cut the deficit in half when Egan converted a PK at 79:36.
The Colonels nearly got the equalizer five minutes later, but Benedetto made a diving save near the right post to deny Aislinn Speranza.
Misericordia carried much of the play early and had several dangerous chances in the first half.
Hannah Larkin played a ball trough to
Ashley Edgell who made a run down the middle of the field before rolling a shot across the goal mouth wide of the right post at 8:58.
A minute later, Logie carried the ball from the left wing and served a ball from the end line, but Cecere punched the ball away.
Sturans gathered the loose ball and lofted a shot from 25 yards out that skimmed off the top of the left post.
The Cougars threatened again when Sturans found
Kendall Pearage on a run down the middle, but Cecere came off her line to stuff the shot.
Logie served again from the left side, but Orfanos' header from in front of the net was sent over the cross bar at 17:49.
Orfanos had another chance later in the half when she carried the ball the middle, cut to her left, and ripped a shot from the top of the box that forced Cecere to make a leaping save to her left.
Wilkes had it best chance of the half when Nicolette Towlen played a ball into the box, but Benedetto charged off her line to win the ball at 43:00.
Five minutes into the second half, Egan played a corner for the Colonels that Megan Lecara got a head on from six yards, but Benedetto made a big save for MU.
Misericordia had a couple of near-misses over the next 30 minutes before Egan's PK.
Wilkes finished the season at 9-7-2 while Misericordia will carry a 10-match win streak into the NCAA Tournament.
