The King's College women's basketball team closed the game on a 15-0 run to beat Misericordia University, 74-59, in a key MAC Freedom contest, Thursday night at Scandlon Gymnasium.
Paige Wampole had 15 points and nine rebounds for the Cougars while
Quintessa Zamolyi added 14 points and six rebounds.
Japriya Carroll had 12 points and
Rachel Carmody had a team-high 11 rebounds and five assists.
After Wampole's free throw pulled the Cougars even, 59-59, midway through the fourth quarter, MU went scoreless over the final 4:49 while King's went 6-8 from the foul line in the final minute.
The Cougars used a 9-0 run early in the first quarter to take an 11-4 lead.
Carroll hit a three-pointer start the run and followed with a jumper. Carmody found Wampole for a layup and added a putback to end the spurt with 5:35 to go in the first quarter.
King's rallied, but Jackie Hajec sank two jumpers to keep MU in front, 17-15, after the first period.
The Monarchs opened the second quarter with four straight points and led throughout most of the stanza before taking a 33-30 lead into intermission.
Zamolyi hit three three-pointers in the third quarter, the first giving MU a 35-33 lead.
Down 40-39, Zamolyi hit another long-range shot to put Misericordia ahead, 52-40, with 5:15 left in the third quarter. She added another three for a 45-41 and
Leanne Forsyth added a jumper to make it 47-42 with 2:27 to go in the third period.
Forsyth made another jumper with less than a minute remaining and the Cougars led 49-48 after three periods.
Carroll opened the fourth quarter with a three-pointer to give the Cougars a 52-48 lead, but King's scored six straight points to go up, 54-52.
After a layup by Carmody, King's scored five straight points to take a 59-54 lead with 7:01 to play.
Kalynn Sefcik sank a jumper and Wampole added a layup to get within 59-58.
Wampole's free throw tied it with 4:49 to go, but the Cougars went scoreless the rest of the way.
King's salvaged a split of the season series while improving to 14-8, 9-2 and remained in a first place tie in the MAC Freedom with FDU-Florham.
Misericordia (14-8, 7-4) is in a three-way tie for third place with Manhattanville and DeSales. The Cougars will visit Wilkes, Saturday.
