The Misericordia University softball team used the long ball to sweep a doubleheader from Eastern, Saturday afternoon at Anderson Field.
The Cougars hit five home runs, including two by
Jessie McDonough, to win, 12-3, 14-1.
Jess Pluta had three hits and three RBI in the opener and
Amanda Butera added three hits.
Maddie Holub had two triples and
Kiersten Pflueger had two hits and McDonough had two hits, including a homer.
Brooke Moyle scattered six hits to pick up the win.
In the nightcap, McDonough, Butera, Briana Holder and
Maddie Stebich all homered.
Victoria Schmidt allowed just one run over five innings to get the win.
The Cougars scored single runs in each of the first four innings in the opener.
Butera reached on an infield single with one out in the top of the first, stole second and eventually scored on an error.
McDonough blasted a solo homer to left to lead off the second inning and Butera tripled and scored on Pluta's single to left center in the third.
Kayla Stephani doubled to lead off the fourth, moved up on a fly out and scored on a wild pitch.
The Cougars scored six times in the sixth thanks to a triple by Holub and doubles by Pluta, Pflueger and Brennan.
Holub tripled in another run in a two-run seventh.
The Cougars took advantage of two Eastern errors to take a 3-0 lead in the top of the first of the nightcap.
Holder belted a two-run homer to give MU a 6-0 lead in the fifth and the Cougars added eight more in the sixth thanks to a two-run triple to right center by Holder and homers by Butera and Stebich.
The Cougars will host Muhlenberg, Sunday at 1:00.
