The Misericordia field hockey team dropped a 2-0 decision to Scranton, Tuesday night at Mangelsdorf Field.
Katelyn Campbell finished with five saves for the Cougars. The junior's biggest stop came in the second half against Megan Gallagher. The Royals sophomore fired a shot from point-blank range to Campbell's right side. The keeper kicked-out her right foot and denied the attempt with her pad. Misericordia was able to win the ensuing scrum and clear the ball.
The Cougars were able to fight off another Scranton scoring attempt later in the half. Sheila Newby carried the ball upfield for the Royals and tried to connect with a cutting Gracie McClatchy in front of the cage. Misericordia's defense read the play perfectly and denied the reigning Landmark Offensive Athlete of the Week before she could control possession.
During the final minutes of the second half, the Cougars defense stood strong and fought off three straight Royals shots. The first attempt was saved by Campbell and the final two were blocked by Misericordia defenders.
Despite several solid defensive stands from the Cougars, they were not able to hold the Royals scoreless. Scranton tallied their first goal 3:35 into the contest when Allie Benadon found the back of the cage with traffic in front of the keeper. Â
Scranton added another goal two minutes into the second half when Gallagher put back a shot from McClatchy. Â Campbell was able to fend-off McClatchy's attempt, but could stop the Royals second chance opportunity.
Misericordia will hit the road for the first time this season against Cortland, Saturday.
