Japriya Carroll scored her 1000
th career point as the Misericordia University women's basketball team stayed undefeated with a win at Eastern, 74-64, Wednesday night.
Carroll scored 16 points with five rebounds while shooting 6-6 from the free throw line. The senior guard tallied her 1000
th career point from the foul line with just under two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
Tessa Zamolyi led the Cougars with 17 points while shooting 5-9 from the field and 3-4 from beyond the arc. The sophomore posted a game-high 17 plus/minus while adding five rebounds, four assists and two steals. She's averaging 17.3 points in her last three conference match-ups.
Rachel Carmody recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds. The senior shot 6-12 from the field with three assists and two steals.
Erica Haefele, who made her third consecutive start, shot a perfect 3-3 from three-point range for nine points with four rebounds and four assists.
Misericordia never trailed as they quickly jumped out to an early lead against the Eagles.
Carmody opened the game with layups on the first two possessions then Haefele knocked down consecutive threes to give Misericordia an early 10-4 lead. Zamolyi then added a three on the following possession to expand their lead to nine points.
After taking a four point advantage into the second quarter, Eastern kept things close with a 16-16 draw in the second.
The Cougars came out of halftime hot and began to distance themselves from the Eagles. Misericordia scored the first four points of the half with a free throw from Carmody and a three-pointer courtesy of Carroll to take an eight point lead.
After an Eastern bucket, Zamolyi hit a three-pointer at the other end to bring the Cougars lead back to nine points.
Misericordia took their biggest lead of the game with 4:22 remaining in the third quarter following a
Jordan Barth layup.
Eastern threatened in the fourth quarter, pulling the game within five points with 4:15 remaining. However, the Cougars were able to take care of business with a Barth layup and four consecutive free throws to put the squad up ten.
Misericordia improved to 16-0 with a 5-0 MAC Freedom mark. The Cougars will host #20 DeSales, Saturday at noon.
