MU Women Tie School Record for Wins on Senior Day

The Misericordia University women's basketball team tied the school record for wins in a season with a 69-60 win over Eastern on Senior Appreciation Day, Saturday in the Anderson Center.

Jordan Barth had a team-high 15 points and Paige Wampole added 13 points and 12 rebounds as the Cougars improved to 21-4 overall.

Tessa Zamolyi had eight points and Leanne Forsyth had seven points, three assists and three steals.

The first quarter featuring tight defense from both teams had Eastern lead by as many as seven points, 14-7, late in the period.  A jumper from the key by Zamolyi and back-to-back buckets by Barth got the Cougars within a point, 14-13, with 1:15 to go.

Eastern answered with a basket in the final minute and led 16-13 after one quarter.

Both teams were scoreless over the first 3:20 of the second period before Wampole dropped a pair of free throws.

Japriya Carroll picked up a steal and went the distance for a layup to give MU its first lead, 17-16, 6:04 remaining in the first half.

Eastern went back in front in its next possession, but Barth finished a nice feed from Wampole down low to put the Cougars ahead for good, 19-18.

The Eagles converted a three-point play in the closing seconds to trim MU's lead to 32-29 at intermission.

Leading 42-38, the Cougars finished the third quarter on a 12-4 run over the final 2:43 to take a 54-42 lead.

Barth ignited the run with a layup and Forsyth took a steal the distance before Carmody converted a three-point play to give MU a 50-40 lead with less than a minute to go.

Wampole's layup and two free throws by Zamolyi stretched MU's lead to 54-42 after three periods.

With all five seniors - Carroll, Liz Waleski, Forsyth, Shea Matta and Rachel Carmody -  taking the floor with 7:34 remaining, Forsyth and Carmody both made free throws to seemingly put the game away as the Cougars led 58-44 with 4:01 to go.

With their postseason hopes in the balance, the Eagles rallied to pull within 63-59 with less than a minute remaining, but Waleski answered with a layup off a feed by Matta and the Cougars converted four free throws down the stretch.

The Cougars will host Manhattanville in the MAC Freedom semifinals, Wednesday at 7:00.
