The Misericordia University men's volleyball team fell to Wells, 3-0, but defeated SUNY Purchase, 3-0, Friday on the first day of the Wells Invitational.
The Cougars were swept by Wells (25-14, 25-20 and 25-17) in today's opening match. The host school combined for a .407 hitting percentage while Misericordia posted a .190 mark.
Brian Ross led the Cougars with 11 kills while recording a .368 hitting percentage. He also combined with
Billy Murphy for three assisted blocks and tallied two digs. Murphy,
Jason Campbell and
Ryan Miller each had six kills for Misericordia.
Miller led the team in digs with a game-high eight while
Conner Westerfield finished second on the team with seven.
Dylan Sellitti had a team-best 14 assists while
Jordan Spidle tallied nine. Spidle was also responsible for the team's lone service ace.
Misericordia cruised to victory in its second match-up against Purchase with a commanding three-set sweep (25-7, 25-14, 25-14). The Cougars only trailed once the entire match when they fell behind 1-0 early in the second set.
Miller helped the Cougars bounce back with nine kills on 11 attack attempts. The sophomore posted an impressive .818 hitting percentage while adding a block and service ace to his stat line.
Murphy had another strong showing with six kills, four blocks and a .625 hitting percentage.
Tyler Mallozzi and
Caleb Bauder also collected six kills for Misericordia. Bauder recorded a hitting percentage of .500 while Mallozzi hit for a .364 mark.
Sellitti was the team's assist leader for the second straight contest. The first-year setter collected 19 assists while Campbell and
Matt Churchill each recorded a game-high four digs.
The Cougars are now 10-9 on the season heading into tomorrow's contests. Misericordia will close out the Wells Invitational against Daemen and SUNY Poly, Saturday at 2:00 and 4:00 PM.
