The Misericordia University men's volleyball team fell to Messiah, 3-0, and Elmira, 3-2, Saturday afternoon in the squad's regular season finale.
The Cougars dropped the opening match against Messiah in three competitive sets, 25-21, 27-25 and 27-25, to close out conference play. Misericordia ended the season with an 8-6 conference mark and will enter the MAC Championships as the fourth seed.
Ryan Miller had a team-high nine kills while
Billy Murphy tallied eight to go along with a team-best .357 hitting percentage.
Jason Campbell and
Brian Ross also contributed with seven kills while
Matt Lavin had six with two blocks.
Jordan Spidle and
Dylan Sellitti both split time as the team's primary setter. Spidle collected a team-high 21 assists while Sellitti had 13 assists.
Conner Westerfield led the team with eight digs while Spidle and Miller both collected six.
Misericordia took a 24-21 lead in the second set when Miller ventured into the scorer's area to chase down an errant set. The sophomore played the ball over the net and into empty space to put the match at game-point. However, the Falcons responded with four consecutive points and eventually took the set.
The Cougars kept things close the entire third set, but couldn't close things out against the Falcons.
In the finale, the Cougars battled back against Elmira, but lost in the fifth set, 15-13. Misericordia took sets one (25-20) and four (25-22), but dropped the second (25-19) and third (25-18).
Miller led the way again with 17 kills and a .286 hitting percentage.
Caleb Bauder was second on the team with nine kills while Campbell collected eight with a team-best .353 hitting percentage.
Sellitti tallied a team-high 23 assists while Spidle had 22 assists. Campbell led the team with nine digs while Westerfield collected eight.
Campbell also collected a team-high three aces, which set a new career-high for the first-year standout. Spidle was second on the team with two aces while Miller, Sellitti and Murphy each had one. Murphy also tied a career-high with six total blocks.
The Cougars finished the regular season with a 20-15 overall record, improving upon last year's 13-17 mark in the team's inaugural season.
Misericordia will play at Arcadia University, Wednesday at 7:00 PM in the first round of the MAC Championships.
