MU Women Clinch Top Seed for MAC Freedom Championships

Emma Sweitzer accounted for five goals as the #6 Misericordia University women's soccer team clinched the top seed in the MAC Freedom Championships with a 10-2 win over DeSales, Tuesday night at Mangelsdorf Field.

Sweitzer had a hat trick and added two assists while Julia Beck had two goals and two assists and Ally Waite scored twice.

Kaylee Sturans had a goal and two assists and Kate Field had a goal and an assist while Michaela Fasolino added a goal.

After DeSales had the first shot of the game in the opening minute, the Cougars flexed their offensive muscle and controlled the ball for the next seven minutes.

Sweitzer dribbled along the end line and rolled a pass across the goal mouth where Fasolino slid to get her toe on the ball to finish at the right post for a 1-0 lead at 7:44.

Sweitzer did all the work on the second goal as she carried the ball for 30 yards down the middle, beat a defender in the box and slotted a shot past a diving keeper into the right side of the goal at 13:14.

The Cougars made it 3-0 off a free kick 10 minutes later.  Beck's shot was saved, but Madison Brdaric collected the rebound near the right post and served back across the goal where Waite tapped it in at 24:41.

Beck headed home a corner from Field to stretch the lead to 4-0 at 27:58 and Waite made it 5-0 with a header off a corner from Sturans at 32:30.

Sweitzer lofted a ball from the right side of the box that Field finished with a header for a 6-0 lead at 33:31.

Sturans rolled a shot from the top of the box that deflected off a defender and hopped over the Bulldogs' keeper to cap a three-goal spurt in three minutes to put MU up, 7-0.

Sweitzer scored her second of the night when she tapped in a pass from Beck at the left post at 40:02 as the Cougars took an 8-0 halftime lead.

Sweitzer finished her night with her 14th goal to extend her team scoring lead to 38 points which is tied for the ninth-best total in school history.

Misericordia is 15-1 overall and 7-0 in the MAC Freedom.  The Cougars will end the regular season at King's, Saturday.

Coach Stauffer's Comments:  "I thought we were really special in our attacking pace and movements tonight which set the tempo early in the match.  We did a quality job of stretching them out and creating the 1v1 opportunities on our flanks.  I was proud of our midfield block with winning first and second balls throughout the match.  Also, our reserve group is improving each time they step on the field, which is necessary for our depth and the future of the program.  We'll look at film and make some improvements, which we can always work on, but it's good to be putting together quality 90 minute efforts as we get closer to postseason."
