The third-ranked Misericordia University women's soccer team advanced to the MAC Freedom championship game with a 5-0 win over Wilkes, Thursday night at Mangelsdorf Field.
Emma Sweitzer had a goal and two assists as the Cougars improved to 17-1 to give head coach
Mark Stauffer his 300
th career victory.
Maegan Allspach,
Michaela Fasolino,
Julia Beck and
Kaylee Sturans all added goals for the Cougars.
The Cougars controlled the play throughout the contest and had several outstanding scoring chances beyond their five goals.
Sweitzer's shot off the left post caromed right to Allspach who tapped in for a 1-0 just 4:21 into the match.
With MU dominating possession, Sweitzer rolled a shot through the box that went just wide of the right post and had another shot deflected off the left post at 12:24.
After
Zoee Farr hit the crossbar at 20:09, the Cougars finally added their goal at 24:23.
Carly Cavanaugh played a long ball from her own defensive third where Allspach flicked it on at the top of the box to Fasolino who chipped over a sliding keeper for a 2-0 lead.
Sweitzer made it 3-0 when she grounded a shot across the box inside the right post at 27:45.
Beck collected a loose ball off a corner and hit low shot from the top right corner of the box inside the left post for a 4-0 lead.
The Cougars closed out the scoring when
Kate Field played a corner into the box and Sweitzer tipped it to Sturans who finished at the right post for a 5-0 lead at 64:06.
Alexis Benedetto made seven saves to record her eighth shutout and the team's 11
th.
MU will host Stevens, Saturday at 1:00. The Ducks defeated DeSales, 2-1, in the semifinals.Â
Madison Brdaric scored with just over one minute to play in a 2-1 victory over Stevens during the regular season.
