Misericordia Names John Davis Head Football Coach

John H. Davis of Newport News, VA has been named head football coach at Misericordia University, Chuck Edkins, director of athletics, has announced.

"I am excited to welcome John Davis to the Misericordia University community as our head football coach," said Edkins.  "He has proven his ability to recruit, retain and develop high-quality student-athletes. His passion for the game will be an asset to our program."

Davis comes to Misericordia after three seasons as head coach at The Apprentice School in Newport News, Va. where he led the Builders to back-to-back winning seasons in 2018 and 2019.

Under Davis' tutelage, the Builders made their first postseason appearance.

"It's an absolute blessing to be named the second head football coach at MU and I can't wait to lead the Cougars out on Mangelsdorf Field," said Davis.  "It was obvious to me during the interview process that Misericordia is an incredibly special place.   It's all about the people. I was so impressed with each person I came in contact with during the hiring process."

Previously, he spent six seasons as an assistant coach at Gallaudet University.  He served as defensive coordinator and assistant head coach and led the Bison to their first top-25 ranking and NCAA Championships appearance.

He was named the American Football Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year in 2014.

In addition, he has served as the head coach at Central Florida Christian Academy where heled the Eagles to just their second winning season and a playoff appearance.   He also spent two seasons as head coach Handley (VA) High School.

A native of Lynchburg, VA, he was a three-year letterman as a defensive back at Liberty University.

Davis is he second head football coach in Misericordia University and takes over a program that made back-to-back postseason appearances in 2018 and 2019.
