MU Football Wins Season Finale

The Misericordia University football team ended the season with a 21-14 win over Lycoming, Saturday afternoon at Mangelsdorf Field.

The win was the first ever for the Cougars over the Warriors who were playing their final game as a member of the MAC.

Dallas Engel connected with Anthony DePalma for a 47-yard touchdown and Alex Hafner had an 80-yard interception return for a score as the Cougars built a 14-0 lead midway through the third quarter.

Eric Jeffries added two-yard TD run late in the fourth quarter.

Zach Stolz-Illge had a team-high 11 tackles and Lamontae Wilson had two interceptions.

After punting on their opening possession, the Cougars got the ball back on downs midway through the first quarter.

The teams exchanged punts and the Cougars put together their first extended drive late in the first quarter.

Michael Gawlik went around right end for nine yards on first down and a face mask penalty moved the ball to the MU 44.

Tamar Sample moved the Cougars into Lycoming territory on a quarterback draw.

MU eventually turned the ball over on downs at the Lycoming 32, but the Cougars forced a three-and-out and got the ball back with :12 left in the first half.

A defensive holding penalty gave the Cougars a first down at the Lycoming 47.  On first down, Engel used play-action and rolled out to his right before finding a wide-open Anthony DePalma down the right sideline for a 47-yard scoring strike just one minute into the second quarter.

Lycoming missed a field goal on the ensuing possession, but the Cougars went three-and-out on their next possession.

Lycoming got the ball back deep in MU territory thanks to a blocked punt in the final minute of the first half.  After an incompletion, the Warriors missed another field goals and the Cougars took a 7-0 lead into halftime.

The teams traded punts to start the second half and Lycoming used a big return to set up first-and-goal.  Penalties moved the ball back to the 25 and Alex Hafner intercepted a pass and raced 80 yards down the right sideline for a touchdown and a 14-0 lead with 9:59 left in the third quarter.

Lycoming took advantage of a short field to get on the board with a one-play drive with 10:40 to go in the fourth quarter.

Misericordia answered with a 10-play, 75-yard scoring drive.

Carlos Artson picked up 14 yards on a reverse around left end and a facemask penalty moved the ball to the Lycoming 42. 

Tamar Sample went off left tackle on a keeper for nine yards and a first down and Eric Jeffries powered in from two yards out to give MU a 21-7 lead with 4:27 to play.

Lycoming scored with less than a minute remaining, but the Cougars recovered the on-side kick to clinch the win.
